Skill Development
Hockey skill development for all levels
Great players are not born. They are built through good coaching, hard work, and time on the ice.
We break the game into its core skills and teach each one the right way.
MCN offers skill development for players and teams, from novice to junior. Our coaches have played and coached at high levels, so players learn from people who have been there. We work with every committed player, not just the top-ranked ones. If a player is willing to put in the work, we will help them get better.
How We Coach
We teach the game the right way
We teach the proper mechanics of every skill. Demonstrations start slow, so players see the correct form. Then we speed things up to show how the skill works at game pace.
We focus on the key details in each area and coach players and teams alike. Development takes time, and it works best with a clear, steady message. That is how we build skills that last.
What We Teach
The skills we teach
We coach the full range of hockey skills. Here is what we focus on, though we are never limited to this list.
Shooting
We start with the mechanics of basic shots, then build toward advanced styles and scoring tactics.
- Accurate wrist, snap, backhand, and slap shots
- A quick release off either foot
- Maximum power out of every shot
- Using the stick to its full potential
Puck Control
We start with the basics of stickhandling and advance through steady progression, slow motion to high speed.
- Stickhandling with the head up at speed
- Evasive moves and dekes
- Puck protection
Passing
Passing is a high priority, from basic push passes to advanced work with the puck and stick.
- A firm, smooth pass with the head up
- Leading a receiver at high speed
- Forehand, backhand, and saucer passes
- Cushioning when passing and receiving
Checking
Contact is for U13 and older only
We teach players how to give and take contact safely and smartly.
- How to avoid a check and roll off it
- Proper angling techniques
- Following through with a shoulder or hip
- The danger zones on the ice
Skating
Skating is the foundation of the game. We coach every style of movement.
- Skating basics
- Edge control
- Crossovers
- Pivots
Signature Program
Power skating
Speed changes the game. Our power skating program builds explosive skating and efficient movement through high-intensity work. Instruction is matched to each player’s level.

- Driving the net
- Speed with the puck
- Stopping and crossovers
Player Evaluations
An honest read on your game
Sometimes the most useful thing we can give a player is an honest read on their game. Our evaluations assess where a player stands, skill by skill, and turn that into a clear plan for what to work on next.
Evaluations are part of our skill development work, and they are also available on their own.
No sugar-coating, and no false promises.
An evaluation gives you
- An honest read on where a player stands
- A clear plan, skill by skill
- Straight, constructive feedback
Video Analysis
Watch the game back
Sometimes the best way to improve is to watch the game back. We offer individual and team video analysis to break down play and highlight where to grow.
Our coaches review game footage, then meet with players or teams to go over skills, decisions, and focus points. It is honest feedback that gives players a clear plan.
